Helping children cope with grief.

9th Annual Pediatric Luncheon

Grandfather

Two teenagers, ages 14 and 15, moved to Seattle from Montana in order to live with and help care for their dying grandfather. The Safe Crossings Counselor provided ongoing support to these girls as they faced a wide range of issues including relocation and separation from their own parents, the task of assuming certain care giving responsibilities for their grandfather, and the grief and loss associated with his illness and death. In this capacity, the Safe Crossings Counselor also served as liaison between the family and the schools, assisting the school staff in understanding the situation the girls faced and in optimally supporting them in coping with this array of complex issues. The girls' parents in Montana articulated a great appreciation for the role Safe Crossings staff played in supporting the girls and providing a calm and consistent presence for them outside of the family circle.

Even today, I see the growth in his eyes and all he has gained from Safe Crossings. The effects have lasted, and both my kids are communicating about their loss at a much higher level than they were before Safe Crossings.
